Most advice about saving on insurance stops at “shop around.” That is true but incomplete — and it skips the levers that often matter more, like how your deductible is structured, whether you are being charged a loyalty penalty, and which discounts you already qualify for but were never offered.
The cheapest policy is not automatically the best one. A low premium with inadequate limits, a high wind deductible, or actual cash value instead of replacement cost can cost far more in a single claim than it saved over ten years. Every guide here treats savings and protection as the same conversation.

This page explains a general process. It is not advice about your specific policy or claim. Insurance rules vary by state and by policy, and they change.
Read your own policy documents, and for anything with money or deadlines at stake, talk to a licensed agent, a licensed public adjuster, or your state Department of Insurance — contacting your Department of Insurance is free.
